Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino Selects Sophie’s Place Child Advocacy Centre and The Centre for Child Development as its “Signature Charitable Partner”

Surrey, B.C. (Aug. 1, 2014): On Monday, July 28th, Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino officially recognized and announced, Sophie’s Place Child Advocacy Centre and The Centre for Child Development as its signature charitable partner during a special presentation ceremony that took place at the Centre in Surrey, BC.

“Fraser Downs has been a longtime supporter of The Centre for Child Development which houses Sophie’s Place under its umbrella. Our parent company, Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, played a role in fostering a relationship between Sophie Tweed Simmons, daughter of Rock ‘n’ Roll royalty Gene Simmons, and Mayor Dianne Watts of the City of Surrey. In November of 2012, Sophie Tweed Simmons lent her name to the newly opened centre in hopes of garnering attention and support for the cause,” said Ken Stratton, General Manager, Fraser Downs.

This new partnership will allow Fraser Downs to contribute to the development of the Centre by hosting an annual fundraiser, engaging staff to volunteer their time and by making financial and in-kind contributions. “Our aim is to be able to engage with the Centre on many different levels and build a meaningful relationship that is not primarily based on monetary support,” added Stratton.

Sophie’s Place is a child advocacy centre focused on providing specialized services to physically, mentally or sexually abused children in a safe and child-friendly setting.
The Centre is the result of a significant collaboration between the Surrey RCMP, Ministry of Children and Family Development, City of Surrey, Ministry of Justice (Victim Services and Crime Prevention), and The Centre for Child Development.

The Centre for Child Development provides specialized pediatric medical rehabilitation services and supports 2,400 children with special needs and their families through 30,000 service sessions per year in Delta, Surrey, South Surrey, White Rock, Langley and other areas of the Lower Mainland. While the Centre serves 2,400 children each year, as many as 25,000
South Fraser children and youth may have some form of developmental disability and 3,000
may have severe disabilities.

“We are a fortunate to have an amazing Sophie’s Place team who share a vision of reducing trauma and providing best practice services to children who have been abused and their non-offending caregivers. We also gratefully acknowledge the contribution of Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino to the renovation and expansion and the safeguarding of our kids,” said Gerard Bremault, CEO the Centre for Child Development, the Child Development Foundation of BC and Sophie’s Place Child Advocacy Centre.

View Royal Casino Encouraging Local Businesses to Participate in Casino Virgin Academy in Support of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Victoria

Victoria, B.C (July 30, 2014): View Royal Casino is on a mission to engage and motivate local businesses to test their luck, foster team engagement and support a local non-profit organization, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Victoria, while learning how to play casino games. All of these things are possible through the Casino Virgin Academy Industry program that View Royal Casino launched last month.

“We came up with this concept because we have noticed that many of our guests, who represent a number of local businesses, wanted to learn how to play casino games but were just not comfortable enough to engage in the process by themselves. We want to provide a safe entertainment environment where our first time players can learn how to play responsibly, have a good time, socialize with their peers and also give back to the community,” said Kwai Lam, General Manager, View Royal Casino.

Casino Virgin nights are hosted on Tuesday nights and registration is required. A local business can sign-up its team for the experience where each team is comprised of 28 employees and an additional 28 spectators. The employee group is split into tournament teams of seven players each that are taken through a table circuit and taught how to play most popular casino games. As a part of the registration process, a $500 donation is required for the Boys & Girls Club.

After the team gets certified in a four game academy format, all participants convene in the Atrium to enjoy complimentary appetizers, interact and reflect on their experience. During the academy night, players play with funny money but have a chance to win a draw prize and also represent the company they work for in the Casino Virgin Academy Industry Playoffs which are scheduled to take place later in the season.

“The Victoria HarbourCats were so pleased to be a part of the View Royal Casino’s Casino Virgin Academy Industry Invitational for so many reasons. It was an outstanding way for our business to partner with the View Royal Casino, and to do so in a tangible way, involving our staff, our
players and our fans. Our players really enjoyed the experience at the casino and learned how to play the games the right way within a first-class hospitality setting,” said Jim Swanson, General Manager and Vice-President, Victoria HarbourCats Baseball Club.

Ralph Bower Horse Racing Photo Gallery To Be Unveiled Monday, Aug. 4 at Hastings

Vancouver, B.C. (July 29, 2014) – Ralph Bower spent 40 years of his professional life with the Vancouver Sun keenly watching the world pass by through the lens of a camera. During his illustrious career he won several national newspaper awards, many of which zoomed in on his passion for horse racing.

Ralph’s nickname is ‘Railbird’. He is the original. Many racing photographers and writers have adopted the handle but it will forever be attached to Ralph Bower, born and raised in North Vancouver.

In support of the Hastings Jockeys Benefit Fund, Bower has graciously offered more than
150 of his original horse racing photos to be on display beginning Monday, August 4 –
BC Cup Day at Hastings Racecourse.

The Ralph Bower Horse Racing Photo Gallery has been months in the making. The unveiling takes place at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, August 4 in the original Casino Room at Hastings, easily accessible from the tarmac area just steps away from the winner’s circle and open to the public, free of charge.

Prints of each exclusive and exquisite Bower photos will be available to the public with entire proceeds going to the Hastings Jockeys Benefit Fund. An 11” x 14” coloured or black and white print will go for $20; an 8” x 10” coloured or black and white print will sell for $15.

Local racing patrons will not believe what they are about to see. Over the years, Bower has captured world-renowned jockeys Willie Shoemaker, Johnny Longden, Chris McCarron, Sandy Hawley and Bill Hartack during Vancouver visits. There is one shot of Laffit Pincay, Jr., Longden and Shoemaker – all together and autographed.

Hollywood stars Mickey Rooney, Jack Klugman, Tim Conway and John Candy have all
been caught through Bower’s lenses during their various movie shoots at Hastings.

Local trainers, jockeys and horses are a big part of the Bower collection. Don Morrison, Sonny O’Connell, Terry Marshall, Harold and Frank Barroby they are all part of Bower’s legendary trainers’ collection of unforgettable photos. Hastings jockeys caught on camera in historic moments include Chris Loseth, Mario Gutierrez, Ken Skinner, Mickey

Walls, Sam Krasner and Nicola Wright, the only female rider to capture the BC Derby
(2002). Bower has also captured stunning and memorable moments of racing
champions Travelling Victor, Prince Scorpian, Delta Colleen and the greatest of them all, George Royal.

“For Mr. Bower to offer his collection to racing fans with all proceeds going to the Jockeys Benefit Fund is a wonderful gesture,” says Fund manager Jeannie Spence. “The people who will benefit from this are the backstretch workers in need and seniors who have left the track but are struggling to survive in today’s environment.”

General Manager Darren MacDonald at Hastings Racecourse has offered weekly prizes to racing fans supporting the cause. “We’ll have some attractive packages for our customers who contribute to the success of this venture,” MacDonald says. “I know that
– without a doubt – people are going to love what they see in the Ralph Bower Racing Photo Gallery. Everyone is welcome to drop by during race days and enjoy something they will never forget.”
